自序
PREFACE

The Plum Blossoms Falling boxing set was published last year in serialized form in the pages of the Overseas Chinese Daily News. Hong Kong practitioners often call it “Plum Blossom Set”, even though the characters for “set” [路] and “falling” [落] actually have distinct pronunciations [meaning that the alternate name likely started as an error in transcription], but there is no difference in the theme of the set when using either name. The postures in this boxing set are large, using the qualities of hardness and reaching. Of the “three flowers” sets [Plum Blossoms Falling, Plum Blossom Fists, Plum Blossom Hands], it is best to learn this one first. With hardness and reaching, it is easier to make expressive postures and movements.
However, a book about Plum Blossom Fists [the second in terms of the learning order] was already published last year as Volume 16 of the Mantis Boxing Series [Plum Blossoms Falling being Volume 20]. That set has fifty-five postures altogether, and so it is actually longer than Plum Blossoms Falling by two postures. Plum Blossom Hands has only thirty-two postures, succinct and refined. Someday I will publish a book about that one as well, in order to complete all of the “three flowers” so that those are interested in learning these sets will have a means of cross-referencing them.

Posture 1: STANDING WITH YOUR BACK TURNED, DOUBLE COVERING PALMS

說明:
Explanation:
Stand in the eastern part of the practice space with the east to your left, west to your right, south in front of you, north behind you. Your gaze is toward the west, your feet are together, and your palms are hanging down. See photo 1a:

Then your palms go to the rear and lift until over your shoulders. See photo 1b:

Then your palms lower until level. See photo 1c:

功用:
Application:
This is a means of regulating the breath and getting settled into place, but has no other meaningful function.

Posture 2: RETREAT, CATCHING A CICADA

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot retreats to the left and then your right [left] foot pulls back, making a left sitting-tiger stance, as your palms become hooking hands and go along the turning of your body by making a “catching a cicada” gesture, your left hand going near to the inside of your right shoulder. See photo 2:

功用:
Application:
An opponent fiercely punches toward my right temple, so I retreat to change my position as I use a catching-a-cicada technique to seal off his incoming hand, my left foot also getting ready to kick out if necessary. This kind of posture is not found in other boxing arts, in which the boxing sets mostly only use fists. This is therefore a signature posture of Mantis Boxing.

Posture 3: KNEELING STANCE, SINGLE CLAW-ARM

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left foot advances a half step and your right foot follows to make a left kneeling stance with your hooking hands maintaining their position relative to each other, your left hand going forward and upward, your right hand going out raising from below. See photo 3:

功用:
Application:
The opponent now attacks from my left, so I step out to deal with it, my left hand first hooking away his incoming hand, my right hand then raising from below to attack his groin. Because a raising kick to the groin gets practiced more often than a raising hand to the groin [the kick thus developing greater control], this hand technique can be very dangerous. I hope you will not use it rashly, for it can be life-threatening.

Posture 4: LIFTING LEG, PALM STRIKE TO THE FACE

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet staying where they are and your left hand maintaining its position, your right hand goes forward with a sealing action. See photo 4a:

Then your right leg lifts to make a one-legged stance as your right hand withdraws to your waist and your right [left] palm braces out with the palm sideways. See photo 4b:

功用:
Application:
The opponent takes advantage of my low posture to attack my upper area, so I lift my leg to gain height while using my right hand to seal off his incoming hand and use my left palm to do a bracing strike to his face with the palm sideways.

Posture 5: THREADING & SEALING PALM, PAVING KICK

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left foot stays where it is and your right foot comes down scraping diagonally to the rear to almost make a mountain-climbing stance, thus performing the “paving kick”, as your left palm [threads forward and then] becomes a fist [sealing to the side] while your right fist becomes a palm and braces out from the rear toward the south. The actions of the hands and foot should be in unison. See photo 5:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to block my palm, so I seal off his hand, then send my right foot diagonally downward to trip out his front leg as my right palm pushes his waist. With so many things happening to him all at once, this technique is difficult for him to defend against. A “paving kick” is a kind of snapping kick to the rear. The threading palm extricates me from his grab and then I add the sealing action, and thus even though he will try to escape my paving kick, it will be too much for him to handle.

Posture 6: RISING POSTURE, CONNECTING FROM BELOW

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your stance not changing, your hands become sealing hands. See photo 6a:

Then your left leg lifts to make a one-legged stance as your hands become fists and pull to the right, your right fist placed behind, the elbow bent, the knuckles by the ear, your left fist placed in front, the elbow slightly bent, the center of the fist facing upward. See photo 6b:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends a hand to attack my right side, so I use both hands to seal off his hand, then lift my leg high as I whip out my left fist to his chin. Because I am rising from below with my whole body, there is many times more power than there would be with just the strength of a single hand.

Posture 7: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT SCRAPING PALMS

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot comes down to make a left kneeling stance as your fists become palms, your right palm going forward with the palm facing downward, your left palm pulling back with the palm facing upward, the palms scraping against each other as they pass, making a sound like tearing silk. See photo 7:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges below my attack and tries to counterattack with a subduing punch or avalanche punch, so I go along with his action by using both palms to scrape into place along his arm, putting his arm in danger of getting broken.

Posture 8: LIFTING LEG, RIGHT OFFERING A PEACH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot lifts to make a one-legged stance as your right palm goes from facing downward to facing upward and lifts forward from below, your left palm sticking close beside the edge of your right palm. See photo 8:

功用:
Application:
The opponent takes advantage of my low posture and attacks my head, so I quickly use a technique of “offering a peach” to lift his incoming hand high and thereby dispel his attack.

Posture 9: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT ROLLING FOREARM

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot comes down and then your left foot follows to make a right kneeling stance as your palms becomes fists, your right fist in front and slightly bent inward, your left fist behind it and sticking close to the inside of your right wrist. See photo 9:

功用:
Application:
Once I have propped away the opponent’s incoming hand, his middle area and lower area are open, so I take advantage of the gap and surge in by lowering my stance and forcefully pushing him. The rolling-forearm technique is like an overwhelming wave. The front arm goes across, the elbow bent, and sticks close to the opponent’s incoming hand so that he cannot move, then the rear arm initiates power to forcefully push him away. With the concentrated force of both a sideways arm and a straight arm, it is difficult to resist against.

Posture 10: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot shifts forward and your left leg straightens to make a right mountain-climbing stance as first your left hand goes forward, sealing downward from above, and then your right fist shoots out upward from below with the elbow bent, your left fist placed below your right elbow. See photo 10:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges my forearm attack and then attacks my upper area, so I immediately switch to a mountain-climbing stance as I first use my left hand to seal off his attack and then send my right fist shooting out to his chin. Some practitioners find it difficult to reach the opponent due to the bent elbow of the subduing punch, not realizing that the torso leans in and is turned sideways, causing the shoulder to reach forward enough to increase the range.

Posture 11: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT SLICING THROUGH THE WAIST

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left fist threads out forward and arcs upward to be blocking across above your head as your right fist becomes a palm and flings out diagonally from the rear, your left foot advancing to make a left kneeling stance. See photo 11:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to grab my subduing punch, so I send my left fist threading out to seal off his hand, advance to trap his front leg with my stance, and fling my right palm diagonally to his waist.

Posture 12: SEALING HAND, LEFT THRUST PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot advances to make a right mountain-climbing stance, your left hand maintaining its position, as your right hand goes forward with a sealing action. See photo 12a:

Then with your stance not changing, your right hand pulls back to your waist as your left fist first lowers to your waist and then thrusts out. See photo 12b:

功用:
Application:
The opponent evades my slice to the waist and then attacks my upper area, so I immediately advance, using my right hand to seal off his incoming hand, and counterattack with a left punch.

Posture 13: ABSORB & SINK STANCE, RIGHT FILLING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet stay where they are, except that your right leg presses straight and your left knee bends, making an absorb & sink stance, as your right fist thrusts out from your waist, your left fist [becoming a palm and] striking against it on the way, making an audible crack. See photo 13:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to block my left thrust punch, but before his incoming hand can arrive, I am already striking out with my right fist, catching him unprepared. The filling punch of Mantis Boxing is usually performed in a big-dipper stance or a mountain-climbing stance, rarely in an absorb & sink stance. I use this stance as a means of suddenly switching to a posture of feigning defeat, so that when I send out my punch, it catches him by surprise.

Posture 14: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT AVALANCHE PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet maintain their position, except that your left leg presses straight and your right leg bends, making a mountain-climbing stance, as your left palm goes forward, sealing downward from above, and your right fist arcs toward your chest and then strikes out with the elbow bent. The final posture is no different from the subduing punch, but the subduing punch strikes upward from below, whereas the avalanche punch strikes downward from above. See photo 14:

功用:
Application:
The opponent blocks my hand and then sends his other hand to try to strike me, so I change my stance to meet it, first using my left hand to seal off his incoming hand, then using my right fist to strike downward to his head. The avalanche punch, just like the subduing punch, maintains a bent elbow when striking out. This makes it look like it is actually short-range technique, but since it involves a degree of leaning in and turning the torso sideways, this not only keeps it from being treated as only a short-range technique, it also increases the power.

Posture 15: RIGHT DOOR-CLOSING KICK

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right fist withdraws in front of your chest, your left fist staying close below your right elbow, then your right foot kicks out, the toes pointing slightly diagonally toward the left. See photo 15:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to block my avalanche punch, so instead of waiting for his incoming hand, I retract my avalanche punch so that he cannot get hold of it, then send out a raising kick. This is an example of the concepts of “strike above to attack below” and “attack one side to strike the other”.

Posture 16: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, CROSS-SHAPED PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with the position of your hands not yet changing, only slightly spreading apart toward your ears, first your right foot comes down to the right [left], passing in front of you, then your left foot steps out to the rear to make a left mountain-climbing stance as your left fist chops down and then arcs behind you while your right fist chops forward, your hands front and rear making a shape like a cross [the arms making the horizontal line, the body making the vertical line], your rear hand slightly higher than your front hand. See photo 16:

功用:
Application:
An opponent comes to attack from behind, so I turn around, first using my left fist to chop away his incoming fist, then following through by using my right fist to chop down to his head.

Posture 17: REACHING LEG, LEFT SWINGING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot comes forward and forcefully stomps down, then your left foot steps out to make a reaching-leg stance and your left fist forcefully swings across forward. See photo 17:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges my cross-shaped punch and is about to counterattack, so I seize the initiative by advancing with a reaching-leg technique to shovel away his front leg and swinging my left fist across to strike to his upper area. This is a technique of upper body and lower body working together. The reaching-leg stance is a low posture and the swinging punch is an attack to the upper area. A low stance with a high punch suggests a contradiction, but I first use the reaching leg to shovel under him, which causes him to lean downward toward me, and then I apply the swinging punch, thereby dispelling the contradiction.

Posture 18: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, LEFT AVALANCHE PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet do not leave their location, but your right leg presses straight and your left leg bends forward, making a left mountain-climbing stance, as first your right hand first goes forward, sealing downward from above, and then your left fist arcs outward from the inside, striking downward from above. See photo 18:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dispels my attacks both below and above, then attacks my middle area, so I first use my right hand to seal off his incoming hand, then use my left fist to do an avalanche punch. When the opponent and I are at close range, this is the best time to use techniques such as the avalanche punch, subduing punch, or piling elbow. Furthermore, to switch from a swinging punch to an avalanche punch is a very natural transition.

Posture 19: BIG-DIPPER STANCE, LEFT HOOKING HAND

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet maintaining their position, sit back onto your right leg, your left leg straightening, making a left big-dipper stance, as your right fist withdraws to your waist and your left fist becomes a hooking hand and tugs to the rear. See photo 19:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to block my avalanche punch, so I sink back, using the momentum to hook onto his hand, a position which I will capitalize on with the following technique.

Posture 20: BIG-DIPPER STANCE, RIGHT FILLING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot advances a step to make a right big-dipper stance as your left hooking hand becomes a palm and your right fist goes straight out from your waist, passing your left palm, your hands striking each other on the way, making an audible crack. See photo 20:

功用:
Application:
Once I have slyly caught his incoming hand, I then advance using a filling punch technique to strike to his chest.

Posture 21: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT BACKHANDED PALM STRIKE

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet maintain their position, except that your right foot steps forward, making a right mountain-climbing stance, as your right fist becomes a palm and rolls over forward to strike downward from above with a backhanded palm strike. See photo 21:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to grab my hand, so I first use my left palm to press his hand down, then send out my right palm to cover downward upon his head. When the palm is facing downward, it is called an “overturned-sky stamp”, which is a method that has more downward crushing power, but the backhanded strike has greater reach and thus is snappier and quicker. Both versions have their advantages.

Posture 22: ADVANCING, SLIPPING & CUTTING PALM

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, without changing the position of your feet, your front foot slightly pulls back and then your stance darts forward a half step as your left palm threads out from below, your right palm withdrawing, and then your right palm smashes out to the right with the palm facing downward [although the photo seems to show a punch], your left palm going to the inside of your right shoulder. See photo 22:

功用:
Application:
The opponent tries to seal off my back-handed palm strike, so I send my left palm threading out to divert his hand while pulling back my right palm, then take advantage of the opportunity by using my right palm to smash across to his neck. The previous backhanded palm strike and this slipping palm strike are to be treated as a two-part technique, related to the “rolling & slipping palms” combo.

Posture 23: WITHDRAWING, LEFT THRUST PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet maintaining their position, first your left foot shifts to the rear, then your right foot pulls back to follow it, still making a right mountain-climbing stance, as your right hand does a sealing action and then pulls back, the elbow bending, and your right [left] palm becomes a fist and goes straight out. See photo 23:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand from below to block my right fist, so I immediately seal off his hand as I scoot back and then thrust out my left fist to his upper area.

Posture 24: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SWINGING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet maintaining their position, your right foot shifts forward and your left foot follows it forward, still making a right mountain-climbing stance, as your right fist goes forward, sweeping across to the left, your left palm slapping against the forearm when it reaches the centerline. See photo 24:

功用:
Application:
The opponent tries to carry aside my left fist, so I quickly advance and send my right fist swinging across with a sweeping strike to his head.

Posture 25: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your stance not changing, first your left palm goes forward and seals downward from above as your right fist withdraws downward, then your right fist thrusts upward from below with the elbow bent. See photo 25:

功用:
Application:
The opponent lowers his stance and tilts his head away to evade my swinging punch, then attacks with a punch, so I use my left hand to seal it off, then thrust out my right fist to his chin. The chin is a small target. Unless you are willing to give attention to hitting targets as part of your ordinary practice, you will often experience the error of “miss by an inch, lose by a mile”.

Posture 26: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT SLICING THROUGH THE WAIST

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, [your left foot steps forward to make a left kneeling stance as] your left fist threads out from below and goes upward, bent inward, and your right palm goes out diagonally from your waist, flinging to the opponent’s waist, the palm angled sideways. See photo 26:

功用:
Application:
The opponent blocks aside my subduing punch, so I send my left hand threading out to seal off his hand as I advance my left foot to make a kneeling stance in order to trap his front leg and fling out my right palm diagonally from right to left toward his waist. This is the softest of the soft techniques. It is a matter of expressing power at the right instant in order for it to be effective.

Posture 27: THRUST PUNCH, CROSS-SHAPED KICK

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right palm goes forward with a sealing action and then withdraws to your waist as your left fist and right foot go out in unison. The punch and kick should be making parallel lines. See photo 27:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to block my palm, so I use the same hand to control his hand, then use a technique of punching and kicking in unison to attack him above and below simultaneously.

Posture 28: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, RIGHT CRUSHING CHOP

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot comes straight down to make a horse-riding stance as your right fist goes forward and chops down from above, your left fist becoming a palm and striking against it with an audible crack. See photo 28:

功用:
Application:
The opponent spreads his hands apart above and below to block both my punch and kick, so I step down and chop downward to his head.

Posture 29: RIGHT SWATTING WINGS, KICK

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your left foot not moving, your right fist hangs down, becomes a palm, and then goes out to the right in unison with your right foot. See photo 29:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges my chopping technique and counterattacks with a punch, so I use my left palm to deflect and use my right palm to counterattack to his face, distracting his vision into focusing on my attacking right palm so that I can attack his groin with a kick. This is an example of the principles of “attacking above to strike below” or “striking to one side to attack the other”. When fighting, such strategies must not be overlooked.

Posture 30: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, LEFT STRAIGHT THRUST PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot comes down to the left, passing in front of you, and then your left foot steps out to make a left mountain-climbing stance as your palms become fists, your right fist placed diagonally behind you, your left fist going straight out in front of you. See photo 30:

功用:
Application:
The opponent tries to move around behind me, but instead of giving him a chance to act, I get there first and attack his upper area. This technique involves the steps flowing together as a hopping action and the rear being turned into the front. As soon as I have turned around, I am already attacking, whereas if I waited until I have properly settled into a new stance before committing to an attack, I would be too late, and so this is the only way for this technique to work. I hope you give attention to this point.

Posture 31: SITTING-TIGER STANCE, LEFT SINGLE WHIP

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left foot pulls back toward the right to make a left sitting-tiger stance as your left fist pulls back, the arm bending, your right hand maintaining its position. See photo 31:

功用:
Application:
The opponent ducks his head to evade my straight punch, so I now swing across to his temple.

Posture 32: SITTING-TIGER STANCE, LEFT HOOKING HAND

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your stance not changing, your left hand becomes a hooking hand and hooks away outward. See photo 32:

功用:
Application:
When I use my single-whip punch to strike to the opponent’s temple, he lowers his stance and ducks his head out of the way, then immediately swings a punch toward my head, so I switch to using a hooking hand. This technique functions as a feint, being both very easy to switch to from the previous technique and able to clear the way for the following technique. With a real technique comes a feint and with a feint comes a real technique, and thus there is always a bridge ready between the two.

Posture 33: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SWINGING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot advances to make a right mountain-climbing stance as your right fist sweeps across forward to the left, your left palm slapping against the forearm. See photo 33:

功用:
Application:
Having hooked away the opponent’s hand in the previous technique, I now have an opportunity that I will not let slip away, so I send my right fist sweeping across to his temple. The previous posture provides a bridge into this one, making it easy to send out this solid strike, and by first sealing off his incoming hand, I also prevent any danger from threatening me.

Posture 34: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, SLIPPING BELOW TO PRESS AWAY THE KNEE

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet maintaining their position, your whole body slightly darts forward to make a horse-riding stance as your right hand smashes diagonally downward to the lower right. See photo 34:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges my swinging punch, but I will not give him a change to make a counterattack because I immediately use the same hand to smash downward, sweeping across to his front leg. This is a method of “striking above to attack below”. Or if he were to try to block my swinging punch, I would slide my arm downward along the outside of his arm to again flow into place, still attacking him in an area that he has no choice but to defend.

Posture 35: RIGHT SWINGING PUNCH, SINGLE WHIP

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left leg presses straight to make a right mountain-climbing stance as your right fist arcs upward and sweeps across to the left. See photo 35a:

Then your right foot pulls back to make a right sitting-tiger stance as your left palm becomes a fist and pulls downward to the rear, your right fist going along with your step by retracting inward, the elbow bending to make a “single whip” posture. See photo 35b:

功用:
Application:
I first swing across above to distract the opponent, then once his attention is focused on dealing with that technique, I switch to whipping inward to strike to his temple.

Posture 36: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot shifts forward to make a right mountain-climbing stance as your left hand goes forward, sealing downward from above, and your right fist shoots out upward from below. See photo 36:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges my forearm attack, and then attacks my upper area, so I immediately switch to a mountain-climbing stance as I first use my left hand to seal off his attack and then send my right fist shooting out to his chin. Some practitioners find it difficult to reach the opponent due to the bent elbow of the subduing punch, not realizing that the torso leans in and is turned sideways, causing the shoulder to reach forward enough to increase the range.

Posture 37: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT SLICING THROUGH THE WAIST

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left fist threads out forward and arcs upward to be blocking across above your head as your right fist becomes a palm and flings out diagonally from the rear, your left foot advancing to make a left kneeling stance. See photo 37:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to grab my subduing punch, so I send my left fist threading out to seal off his hand, advance to trap his front leg with my stance, and fling my right palm diagonally to his waist.

Posture 38: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT BACKHANDED PALM STRIKE

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot advances to make a right mountain-climbing stance as your left fist becomes a palm and covers downward, your right palm arcing inward, and then your right palm rolls over forward to strike downward backhanded. See photo 38:

Posture 39: CENTERING STANCE, RIGHTWARD DRAMATIC CIRCLE

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot darts forward and your left foot follows it, with both legs bent and both feet maintaining contact with the ground, thus making a centering stance, as your palms become sealing hands [with your right step], then fully close into fists [with your left step] and drag to the rear, the center of your right fist facing downward, the center of your left fist facing upward. See photo 39:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to try to block my palm, so I immediately use both hands to tightly seal off his arm, then fully grab it and drag it to the rear, a position which I will then capitalize on in the following technique. There is a principle in boxing arts called “absorb and shoot back out”, which has to do with gathering and releasing. Releasing is easy to understand and easy to apply, but gathering is difficult. Not only do I not resist against the opponent’s incoming hand, I go along with it and pull on it, which easily causes his whole body to lean forward, whereupon I can release power to send him away.

Posture 40: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SWINGING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot shifts forward to make a right mountain-climbing stance as your right fist goes forward, sweeping across to the left. See photo 40:

功用:
Application:
Having sealed off the opponent’s hand in the previous technique, I now have an opportunity that I will not let slip away, so I send my right fist sweeping across to his temple. The previous posture provides a bridge into this one, making it easy to send out this solid strike, and by first sealing off his incoming hand, I also prevent any danger from threatening me.

Posture 41: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your front foot slightly lifts and your rear slightly drags forward, still making a right mountain-climbing stance, as your left hand goes forward, sealing downward, and then your right fist thrusts upward from below with the elbow bent. See photo 41:

功用:
Application:
The opponent dodges my swinging punch and then attacks my upper area, so I immediately shift forward in my mountain-climbing stance as I first use my left hand to seal off his attack and then send my right fist shooting out to his chin. Some practitioners find it difficult to reach the opponent due to the bent elbow of the subduing punch, not realizing that the torso leans in and is turned sideways, causing the shoulder to reach forward enough to increase the range.

Posture 42: WITHDRAWING STEP, HANG & THRUST PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot shifts back and then your right foot pulls back to follow it, your feet going back a half step, still making a right mountain-climbing stance, as your right fist carries upward, the fist sideways, and your left fist thrusts out from below. See photo 42:

功用:
Application:
The opponent deflects my subduing punch, then sends a hand to chop down to my head from above. This action is fast and fierce, so I withdraw to evade the brunt of it, using a hanging hand to prop away his incoming fist, and send out a thrust punch to attack his chest. This is an example of the wondrous tactic of retreating in order to advance. Do not think of it as some ordinary technique or look upon it dismissively.

Posture 43: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT CRUSHING CHOP

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet maintaining their position, your right foot first shifts forward and then your left foot follows the momentum by also darting forward, still making a right mountain-climbing stance, as your right fist turns over and chops down forward, your right [left] palm striking against it, making an audible crack. See photo 43:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to block my thrust punch, which I ignore because I immediately send my right fist above me chopping down to his head. A direct chopping punch is referred to as the technique of MT. TAI CRUSHES THE HEAD, which is the first of the “eight hardnesses”. Although this technique involves hardness, it flows smoothly and has no sense of stiffness.

Posture 44: KICK, RIGHT ROLLING FOREARM

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right fist hangs down as you sit back onto your left leg, then your right foot kicks out forward. See photo 44a:

Then your right foot comes straight down [and your left foot slides forward] to make a right kneeling stance as your left palm becomes a fist and presses against your right wrist, both fists pushing forward in unison. See photo 44b:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends a hand high to block my chop, so I send a raising kick to attack his groin. He then slips his hand down to block my kick, so I lower my stance and use a rolling forearm technique to push away with the power of my whole body.

Posture 45: RETREATING WITH LARGE WHEELING

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot extends to the rear to make a mountain-climbing stance, then your right fist chops down, continuing into your fists unceasingly swinging downward from above, your left fist coming up as your right fist is lowering, your right fist coming up as your left fist is lowering, your feet alternately retreating in coordination with your hands, until reaching the position in photo 45f. See photos 45a-45f [in which your feet are retreating in the order of left foot, right foot, left, right, left, right]:

Then your right fist draws downward from above to finish diagonally behind you as your left fist arcs upward to prop up over your head and your right foot goes forward with a scooping kick to make a big-dipper stance. See photo 45g:

功用:
Application:
The wheeling is done fast because the situation is urgent and done with a long reach because I am getting crowded, the two qualities of fast and far reinforcing each other. If you find yourself surrounded by opponents, the wheeling technique can come in handy.

Posture 46: ADVANCING WITH TRIPLE WINCHING

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your stance not yet changing, your right fist flings out diagonally upward, your left palm striking against it, and then your left foot goes forward with a stealth step behind you. See photo 46a:

Then your right foot steps out to make a right big-dipper stance. See photo 46b:

(Note: The positions in these photos are then repeated twice, meaning that the posture is performed a total of three times, thus fulfilling the name of the posture.)
功用:
Application:
When both fists are swinging, it is like two wheels on a cart, hence “wheeling”, but when it is just one hand, it is only called “winching”. Both fists supply a constant flurry, whereas one fist on its own has to move even faster to defeat the opponent. Regardless, both of these techniques are actually superb.

Posture 47: LIFTING LEG, LEFT SUBDUING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left foot lifts to make a one-legged stance as your right fist becomes a sealing hand, sealing downward from above, and your left palm becomes a fist and thrusts upward and forward from the rear. See photo 47:

功用:
Application:
The opponent evades my attack to his right side and then attacks to my left side, so I turn to the left to meet it, first using my right hand to seal off his incoming hand, then thrusting out a subduing punch to strike to his chin. To perform a subduing punch in a mountain-climbing stance is common, but to do it with a lifting leg is very rare. The purpose of it is to guard against a surprise attack to my lower body.

Posture 48: LIFTING LEG, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left foot comes down and your right foot lifts to make a right one-legged stance as your left fist turns over to seal downward and your right fist thrusts up from below. See photo 48:

功用:
Application:
Same as in the previous posture, except with left and right reversed. The two postures combined form a continuous technique.

Posture 49: DOUBLE SEALING HANDS, PAVING KICK

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot comes down scraping diagonally to the rear as your hands become sealing hands and push out forward. The actions of the hands and foot should be in unison. See photo 49:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends a hand threading upward from below to grab my right hand, so I send my left hand threading upward from below to seal off his hand, then send my right hand threading out to seal off his elbow, a position which can break his arm, for I simultaneously use my right foot to trip out his front leg. This is the subtlety of the paving-kick technique.

Posture 50: WITHDRAWING STEP, LEFT CARRYING PALMS

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot retreats diagonally and then your left foot pulls back to make a left sitting-tiger stance as your hands switch from sealing hands to palms and go forward carrying upward from below, your left palm in front with the arm extended, your right palm behind it at the inside of your left shoulder. See photo 50:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sinks his elbow to eliminate my technique of threading to his elbow, then strikes downward toward my head, so I withdraw a step to evade his attack and send both palms carrying upward to deflect his force. If his arm ends up threaded straight through between my palms, this position can break his arm.

Posture 51: WITHDRAWING STEP, RIGHT CARRYING PALMS

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left foot retreats and then your right foot pulls back to make a right sitting-tiger stance as your right palm threads out from below your left armpit to go forward carrying upward from below, your left palm going to the inside of your right shoulder. See photo 51:

功用:
Application:
Same as in the previous posture, except with lefts and rights reversed. These two postures are to be performed as a continuous action.

Posture 52: TURN AROUND, DOUBLE HOOKING, WEAVING KICK

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet staying in their location, turn around to the left, your palms at the same time becoming hooking hands and hooking away behind you. See photo 52a:

Then your right foot kicks out. See photo 52b:

功用:
Application:
The opponent suddenly moves around behind me and punches to my middle area, so I turn around and use double hooking hands to seal off his attack, then use a raising kick to attack his lower area, thus putting him in the predicament of having to deal with things happening both above and below.

Posture 53: SITTING-TIGER STANCE, LEFT CARRYING PALMS

說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot comes straight down, then you turn around to the left and your left foot pulls back to make a left sitting-tiger stance as your hands become palms and carry forward to the left, your left palm in front, the arm straight, your right palm behind, near the inside of your left shoulder. See photo 53:

功用:
Application:
This is the same as the ordinary carrying-palms technique, but this time it also serves as the closing posture for the whole set. The opening and closing postures of the sets in Mantis Boxing are always filled with intention [as opposed to just limply standing around], which is obvious from looking at this one.
