ABOUT THE ADDITIONAL PHOTOS
When I wrote The Art of Taiji Boxing [1925], I used photos of Yang Chengfu. Where there were postures unrepresented by these photos, I added photos of myself, resulting in fifty photos altogether [thirty-seven of Yang, thirteen of Chen], but readers felt that this amount was still not enough. Last year [1932], I was invited to Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong by Liang Jinyu. He wanted to photograph me demonstrating the entire Taiji boxing set, every transitional movement, nothing left out. This resulted in a total of a hundred and eighteen photos, sixty-eight more than the original total.
I now present these photos, which are to be used alongside the text of the original book in order to provide readers of it with even greater understanding. Because many of the photos are reused, they have been specially arranged into a list showing the postures in their complete order. The continuous series of movements, including repetitions, amounts to two hundred sixty-one postures [meaning there are a hundred forty-three occasions in which photos from among the hundred eighteen are reused]. With the photos listed in this way, no extra effort is required on your part.
Comparing this new set of photos to the original ones taken of Yang Chengfu while in Hangzhou, they noticeably adhere to the same orientation: In the beginning posture, he and I are both facing to the south, and thus the west is to our right, east to our left, and the north is behind us. Whatever direction the subsequent postures move toward, they are all based on the initial posture facing south. From beginning to end, these photos stick to this pattern, and thus you can always know what direction the postures are facing.
When turning to a new direction, there is no actual pausing in the motion, but a photo or two has been added for such moments in order to make it clear which direction a posture has turned toward. Although this is not as detailed as a film reel would be, you will nevertheless get the general idea. When turning, the shift to the new direction also has to be complete, neither turning insufficiently nor too far, and then the proper orientations will be maintained.

A PLACE FOR TAIJI BOXING
by Chen Weiming
[published in 鄞縣縣國術館一周紀念刊 Yin County [in Ningbo, Zhejiang] Martial Arts Institute’s 1st Anniversary Commemorative Publication, New Year’s Day, 1931]
Huang Lizhou [Zongxi] said that the internal school of martial arts began with Zhang Sanfeng and later spread through Ningbo, and that famous masters included Zhang Songxi, Ye Jimei, Wu Kunshan, Zhou Yunshan [Yunquan], Shan Sinan, Chen Zhenshi, and Sun Jicha. It was subsequently passed down through many hands, producing many famous masters in Shanxi, Henan, and Hebei, while ironically in Ningbo there were none. By a hundred years ago, everyone was practicing external styles, and the internal school had been almost lost.
I established the Achieving Softness Boxing Society in Shanghai to promote Taiji Boxing. Over the last five years, more than a thousand people have joined the school. A third of them are natives of Ningbo, all of whom are hardworking and perseverant, embodying the martial attitude of ancient days.
A Martial Arts Institute was established in Ningbo a year ago and has since seen great success. Its members have gradually been focusing more attention on Taiji Boxing, and hence this new generation of heroes will surely surpass those of the past. And now that the internal school of boxing arts has thereby returned to Ningbo, not only does this bode well for the future of Ningbo, it also brings glory to our nation’s martial arts.

A EULOGY FOR GENERAL LI FANGCHEN [JINGLIN]
by Chen Weiming
[published in 國術聲 Martial Arts Voices, Vol. 3, Issue #5, July 20, 1935]
The General’s sword skill was so subtle it was hard to comprehend.
I knew of him early on, hearing about the master from Wan County.
When he came to Shanghai, with but a glance it was clear he was a remarkable man.
Heroic and vigorous, he was a great soldier and yet had a graceful bearing.
A banquet was arranged to welcome him with wine.
One person told ten others, who each told ten more, and so on, and soon spectators filled the street.
When the general arrived at the banquet, he was greeted with tremendous warmth.
He drew his sword and began to dance, moving as fast as lightning.
Flashes of light seemed to shoot down constellations, energy coursing through and arcing like a rainbow.
Every move a transformation, he startled the mind and confused the eye.
One moment he was like a graceful delicate maiden,
the next a bear-like bodyguard.
He practiced his sword fighting every day until steam rose from him and sweat fell.
He taught me his sword art, favoring me with his good graces.
I demonstrated my Taiji set for him, moving leisurely and carefree.
He sighed in approval: “You express the fundamentals of the art.”
I followed his guidance and learned much from him about standards and patterns.
“Drawing upon the boxing set makes it easier to learn the sword.” – a tip that has given me great delight.
The General told me: “My teacher was an unusual man.
He was Chen Shijun of Yingchuan.
With his ‘three realms’ sword method, he transformed magically.
I obtained only the first two levels – the ‘human realm’ and ‘ground realm’ – but never rose to the ‘sky realm’.
My teacher warned me to treat all gentlemen with sincere respect,
and yet my rank and position came to me due to the sword.
Whenever I went into battle, it was the sword art that led me through it.
Within the fray, I swept aside countless soldiers.
The sword flashed in a blur, scything away men like dead wood.
Enemy commanders envied and flattered,
then threw down their arms and ran away to hide.
Now ever since I’ve been free of war, I’ve sought the Way and the simple life.”
He promoted our martial arts with great encouragement.
Esteemed as a hero, this swordsman was more like a spirit.
Woe to the Republic that he is gone from it. He went through twenty years of chaos,
the turmoil of battles, the suffering of the people,
the breaking of bones and spilling of blood, and looking to the sky in lament.
The people could not make a living, for even their lives had become too cheap.
Armies then could not be maintained, sources of money drying up.
With powerful nations crowding in, the will to fight subsided.
Volunteer armies had to battle alone, the front line changing all the time.
Looking in all directions, it was hard to find anyone who would face up to the national crisis.
In the prime of his life, the General lived like a recluse, free of cares,
but when the time came to rise to action, he could make vengeance against the merest snowflake.
He had the body of an arhat, and yet he was pulled down by sickness.
Alas, to pass away is the way of things.
I was struck with sorrow when I heard the news, heartbroken.
On his deathbed, he had said: “I don’t deserve to live anyway”.
With black heart and red eyes, he had galloped after gain.
Under the blue sky and white sun, he now walks among ghosts.
Woe to the Republic. There will be none like him again.
I’ll miss you, General. You were more than a mere friend.
