BRIEF BIO OF THE AUTHOR

編者皖之歙縣人民國八年創中華武術會於上海
I am from Xi County, Anhui. In 1919, I founded the Chinese Martial Arts Association in Shanghai.

十二年又創中華體育師範學校兼任校長迨國民軍囘師首都遂加入軍事革命戰線
In 1923, I also founded the Chinese Physical Education Teacher-Training School, holding the position of principal. Then when the militia returned to the capital, I joined the military and went to the front lines of the Revolution.

十三年任河南全省武裝警察豫東第一大隊長兼任河南全省警務諮議
1924 – held the position in the Henan Military Supply Police of head of the Eastern Henan 1st Group, as well as of consultant to Henan Police Affairs.

十四年任西北邊防督辦公署運輸處代理主任旋調包寧長途汽車路局主任
1925 – was sent to the defense of the northwest frontier, appointed as deputy head supervisor of government transport, and soon given the role of head of the bureau for bus transportation through Ningxia.

十五年任國民軍第五軍參議兼全軍武術總教練曁兼本軍學兵團團附代團長職權未幾升任國民聯軍援陝第一路總司令部內防處處長仍兼學兵團
1926 – was appointed as an advisor to the 5th Army Militia, chief martial arts coach for the whole of the 5th Army, training them with the authority of a regiment commander, and was soon promoted to head of the general headquarters of the 1st Line Internal Defense overseeing national united forces giving military aid to Shaanxi, while still training the army.

十六年代表方總司令出關報告西北軍革命工作於國民政府同年調升國民革命軍第十一路軍總指揮部參議兼本路軍行營軍械處處長
1927 – represented the commander-in-chief [Chiang Kai-shek] by going into Manchuria and reporting to the northwestern army on the revolutionary status of the national government. That same year, I was promoted to advisor to the general headquarters of the National Revolutionary Army 11th Line, as well as head of the field headquarters ordnance department.

十七年仍任國民革命軍第四軍團總指揮部軍械處處長嗣奉國民政府國術研究館電調恢復中華武術會幷受聘任國術館董事現奉令籌備上海特別市國術分館
1928 – was again promoted, now to the general headquarters ordnance department of the National Revolutionary Army 4th Group. Then I received a telegram from the National Government Martial Arts Research Institute that I was to resume my duties at the Chinese Martial Arts Association, and I was appointed by the director of the [Central] Martial Arts Institute to prepare a special Shanghai branch of the institute.

AUTHOR’S PREFACE

本編為鄙人敎授武術所得之經驗。加以詳細研究。務求切合實用。其關於生理、心理、敎育、之種種作用方法。均經融會參證。而為一種改良之新式運動。施於女子。尤覺多所裨益也。蓋自擔任婦女靑年會體育師範學校武術科敎授。已四年有餘矣。嘗悉心研究切合女子之武術。本所心得。著為此編。自非剿襲雷同之空談可比也。然而西人每視我國武術為一種花法(即一種裝飾動作)之運動。謂講體育則不按生理之次序。講實用則為一種配合而成之假式擊打術。非若歐美之武術。均係對擊而無單練。其攻擊防禦之法。至為周密巧妙云。彼從表面上觀察。遂有輕視之心。實則此種眼光。蓋未深悉我國武術之內容者也。夫我國武術之練習程序。由簡而繁。由單而雙。由淺而深。西人之所訾。乃其簡者單者淺者也。此編經西人高許兩女士。親身習練研究。而後推許為我國最良之運動術。因囑鄙人編製圖說。定為課本。俾資傳習。高許兩女士者。均現任本校生理學舞蹈球戲之敎師也。書成。爰將編輯大意宣於簡端。

This book is based on my experience of teaching martial arts, as well as studying them meticulously, and I have strived to make this material functional. Its relationship in practical terms to physiology, psychology, and physical education has in each case been tested to deliver a kind of improved new means of exercise. I have taught this material to women, who particularly have found it to have benefits. I have been in charge of martial arts instruction at the YWCA Teacher-Training School for already more than four years, where I have carefully studied the suitability of martial arts for women. Because I have written this book based on what I have learned, it hopefully will not have the hollow voice that comes from copying and repeating the words of others.
     Westerners often regard our nation’s martial arts as a kind of “flowery” method of exercise (i.e. decorative movement) and say that our physical education is thus not in accordance with physiological processes. In terms of its use, they say it is just a cooperative exercise of people pretending to hit each other. Unlike the martial arts of Europe and America, which involve only sparring and have no solo practice, our methods of attack and defense are meticulous and clever. But because they see only the outward appearance, they look upon our methods with contempt. Such a view merely shows a lack of understanding for the content of our nation’s martial arts. The process of our martial arts training goes from the simple to the complex, from solo work to partner work, from the superficial to the deep. But what Westerners usually slander us with is that these arts are too “simple”, too “solo”, and too “superficial”.
     However, this manuscript has been tested by a Westerner, Ms. Lily Haass, who personally learned the set and then commended our nation for having the finest exercise arts. She advised me to turn it into a handbook which would serve as a teacher’s guide for transmitting the material. She is currently giving instruction in physiology, dance, and ball sports in this school. With the writing now finished, I here present these general ideas in brief.

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

一本編分上下兩編。上編係單練、成路、成套、之姿勢。為下編之基礎。下編係對練、攻擊、防禦、出奇、制勝、之法。
– This book is divided into two parts. The first part has to do with solo practice, a complete set of postures in sections. The second part has to do with partner practice, remarkable methods of attack and defense. [This application section does not appear in the book. Presumably it was planned but then abandoned and this mention of it was written during the planning stage but then accidentally left in.]

一本編係彈腿門之一種。從前為秘不傳人之武術。方今科學昌明。百術公開時代。不得故步自封。視為獨得之奇。故本編基于利己利人之心。惟願我國民。體智德三育。均完善無缺。共登健康之域為職志。
– This book shows a set from the Tantui school, a martial arts system that was in former days kept secret rather than taught to others. In our present scientific era, all arts are shared publicly instead of complacently regarded as some kind of precious personal property. Hence this book is made with a mentality of benefiting both self and others. I wish for my people to have access to all three parts of education – physical, intellectual, ethical – no part ignored. My ambition is that we climb together to the realm of health.

一本編之歌譜。為自昔所傳創造人之作。讀其句語。難於索解之處正多。因係原著。未便擅改。免失其眞。
– The songs and movement guides in this book were made long ago by the founders of the art. Reading through their phrases, there are often parts that are difficult to explain [and in fact seem to bear little relation to the set presented in this book, or even to each other], but in order to maintain a connection to the original material, let us not alter them, and thereby we will avoid entirely losing a sense of what was the authentic version.

一本編所定之術名。或因便於句讀。或切於實用。或想像形式以定之。攷我國武術名詞。各家各派。分歧不同。或各套動作同。而名詞則異。種種不能一致。此為我國之缺點。實受秘密主意之害也。特聲明之。
– The names of the techniques in this book sometimes represent a kind of simple punctuation between the postures, sometimes separate distinct applications, and sometimes provide poetic visualizations as to how a posture should look. Examining the terminology of our nation’s martial arts, each system and each style has divergent usages. Sometimes movements are the same but the names are different [or vice versa], and then there is no way to find consistency between them. This is one of our nation’s shortcomings, a counterproductive tendency of keeping ideas secret, and we should instead make things clear from the start.

一本編全書共記六路。學習時可以一路習熟。再習二路。庶免博而不專之弊。故每路始以冲天炮。終亦以冲天炮。以便分段休息。
– The set in this book is presented in six sections. When you are familiar with the first section, you may then move on to practicing the second section. Always avoid the error of learning too much at a time instead of focusing on just a few things. For this reason, every section begins and ends with the posture of CANNON TO THE SKY, providing a stopping point between sections.

一本編所說明練習方法。本平日教授之經驗。着筆祇求明白。不求文字之工。尚祈閱者鑒諒。
– The practice methods explained within this book are based on everyday teaching experience. In writing them down, I have only sought for the writing to be very clear, not for the writing to be eloquent. I hope you will pardon me for this.

一本編挂一漏萬之處。在所不免。尚望海內方家指正為。幸
– For every detail included in this book, there are inevitably many more that have been left out. I hope experts throughout the nation will offer corrections, for which I would feel fortunate indeed.

頭一路出左步左手旋上右手堪右肘掛右肘上左步出左捶轉身右手旋上左步堪左肘掛左肘上右步挨身靠迎面排脚出左步左手旋堪右肘右脚踢右垂堪並步堪右肘掛右肘上左步出左垂歸左步堪左肘上右步挨身靠
(Section 1) “Step out with your left foot. Your left hand rotates. Step forward with your right foot. Confront with a hanging right elbow. Step forward with your left foot. Send out your left fist. Turn around, rotating your right hand. Step forward with your left foot. Confront with a hanging left elbow. Step forward with your right foot. Step your feet together and lean your body. Do a crashing kick directly forward. Step out with your left foot. Your left hand rotates. Confront with your right elbow. Your right foot kicks. Your right fist confronts. Step your feet together, confronting with your right elbow. Hang your right elbow. Step forward with your left foot. Send out your right fist. Bring back your left foot. (Section 2) “Perform PLUCKING GOLD FROM BEHIND THE HEAD. Coil your hand and hang his face. Step out with your left foot. Your left hand rotates. Step forward with your right foot. Swing your right fist. Hang your right elbow. Pull back your left foot. Send out your left fist. Turn around, rotating your left hand. Step forward with your right foot. Press down with your right elbow. Step your feet together and lean your body. Perform DRILLING WHIP, SLIPPING OFF THE BELT. Step out with your left foot. Your left hand rotates. Step forward with your right leg. Go forward and lean against. Bring back your right foot. Confront with a hanging right elbow. Step forward with your left foot. Send out your left fist. (Section 3) “Coil your hand with great strength. Step out with your left foot. Your left hand connects. Your right hand connects. Cross with double fists. Double fists prop up. Your right foot kicks. Do a chasing step, sending out double fists. Turn around, stepping out with your left foot. Your left hand rotates. Lift your right knee. Press down with your right elbow. 2. Your left toes turn toward the left rear and your right foot shifts to the east from the A position to the C position (and you are again squatting down in a horse-riding stance). Within rotating there is a twisting elbow. Within propping up, there is wiping.
Going from coiling to wiping, it will be difficult for the opponent to defend against.
When performing GOLDEN SILK WIPES THE BROW, the front hand is forceful.
Do left and right confronting elbows, then DOMINATING TIGER BLOCKS THE ROAD.
Do a pushing hand, drape to cover, then wrap and stomp.

In 1919, I established the Chinese Martial Arts Association in Shanghai. I later founded the Chinese Physical Education Teacher-Training School. I compiled textbooks such as Practical Martial Arts and China’s New Calisthenics, demonstrating all of this material at the Far East Athletics Conference, which received praise from physical education experts, and clubs sprung up as a result.
     Then in 1924, fighting broke out in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, making business conditions strained, affecting both the Association and School so that we were unable to keep progressing with any energy. When militia troops returned from the front lines with news of what was going, I then decided to enlist in the army, whereupon I held various posts, one after another. I had not yet suspended my duties at the Martial Arts Association, but then broke away after inviting Wang Yiting [Wang Zhen] to take my place as president of the Association [who was also president of the Chinese Buddhist Association at the time] and keep things going. I then packed up my things and went to join the militia in the north. We fought everywhere – Henan, Hebei, Chahar, Suiyuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, Jiangxi – running around altogether some thousands of miles, longing to serve the Revolution, and soon we will accomplish our goal. Now that success for the Northern Expedition is imminent, it is time to begin a more governmental task.
     The physical education of the masses is now the chief priority. Furthermore, martial arts education is the foundation of our national character, the expression of our genuine national identity. Our Chinese nation was founded more than four thousand years ago, and though we have in modern times descended into being a somewhat colonized country, we are not yet crushed. We are bound up in the fearless spirit of our first president [Sun Yat-sen]. If not, would we be so willing to risk everything and die like martyrs to accomplish this great endeavor?
     I have survived the blades and bullets, currently serving in the National Revolutionary Army 1st Corps, 4th Group, general field headquarters ordnance department, and I am now proceeding to the capital [Nanjing] at the request of Martial Arts Research Institute directors Zhang Zhijiang and Li Jinglin, engaged to be a Martial Arts Research Institute director myself to start a Shanghai branch.
     In the old days in Shanghai I received comrades from the press [to announce the opening of Wu’s first schools], among them meeting my good friend Zhou Shoujuan [a famous newspaper editor, novelist, screenwriter], and now I am showing this book to him, which I made so long ago. Because I had no chance to finish revising it, it ended up quite delayed. Now at last the day has come for it to be published, and I am providing these extra words to commemorate the long path it has taken.

Wu Zhiqing is from Xi County, Hebei. When he was young, he practiced martial arts, at the same time studying the scholarly arts. He did obeisance to the famous boxing masters Yu Jinsheng [Zhensheng] and Ma Jinbiao for instruction, who had both served as instructors to Commander Ma Liang’s forces. Gaining a reputation, Wu mastered the practice of Cha Boxing as well as the Muslim art of Tantui, and then served as instructor for the Shanghai YWCA Physical Education Teacher-Training School.
     In 1919, he founded the Chinese Martial Arts Association in Shanghai. He also participated in the Far East Athletics Conference, performing boxing sets and weapon sets, receiving praise from both Chinese and foreigners alike. He does not take the struggle for our nation’s glory lightly. In 1923, he founded the Chinese Physical Education Teacher-Training School, holding the position of principal.
     In 1924, fighting broke out in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, making business conditions strained, bringing the Association and School to a halt. At that time, the Revolutionary Army was already preparing to begin the Northern Expedition, so Wu packed up his things and went to join the militia in the north. They fought everywhere – Henan, Hebei, Chahar, Suiyuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, Jiangxi – running around altogether some thousands of miles.
     Having survived the blades and bullets, he was at the end serving in the National Revolutionary Army 1st Corps, 4th Group, head of the general headquarters ordnance department, having also been chief martial arts coach for the whole of the [5th] Army. Then Zhang Zhijiang and Li Jinglin invited him to be a Central Martial Arts Institute director, in the post of director of the Shanghai Martial Arts Institute, as well as head of the textbook editing department of the Central Martial Arts Institute itself. His own works have been spread throughout Shanghai by the major book publishers.
     He is a straightforward man with a strong sense of what is proper, and he has no respect for practicing martial arts for evil purposes. During his time working at the Chinese Martial Arts Association, there was a fighter from Sichuan (whose name will remain anonymous) who wanted to test Wu’s skill. Wu angrily chastised him about righteousness, saying: “We shouldn’t be fighting while our nation is weak and our people are impoverished, we should all be doing our utmost to promote our national culture! It is our duty to be encouraging a national spirit, so how can we be fighting amongst ourselves, foolishly competing? In any case, when two tigers fight, one is sure to be wounded, and so there’s really no point!”
     He accused Wu of being a coward and insisted on a bout between them. Wu had no choice and so they went to an open area to fight. They crossed hands and almost right away Mr. Anon attacked with a punch above and a kick to the groin below. Wu blocked the attacking arm upward, then he suddenly brought his palms together and applied GOLDEN DRAGON CLOSES ITS MOUTH (a technique from Cha Boxing), grabbing the man’s foot and throwing him. Anon crumbled to the ground in pain and hollered to stop. There was already blue swelling on the top of his foot and thereupon his doubts about Wu’s skill were dispelled.
     In 1928, I participated in the Central Martial Arts Institute’s national tournament, where I got to see Wu’s elegant demeanor and scholarly refinement. He did not seem like the typical bushy-eyebrowed glaring-eyed warrior. Seeing him in this way gave me an even greater sense of his deep level of skill and I knew that he cannot really be classed amongst ordinary people. Among his remarkable works are books such as China’s New Calisthenics, written in view of scientific principles, which has been published by the Shanghai Publishing House and has achieved great popularity.
